Bete (Dan Grebo) Ritual Mask

$1,950.00Price
From West Africa, the Bete people, possibly Dan or Grebo, this has remarkable carving and a unique form. The traditional Bete form of shielding the face behind smooth stylized horns are here stylized further, and become clasped hands. As the masks with horns show an unnatural number, so too does this mask exhibit more fingers than nature provides.
  • Details

This very large old West African dance mask has carved fingers clasped before the face, in a rarely seen interpretation, a unique form, of the usual Bete protective smooth horns under the banded hood. It is in very good condition with signs of use and age. This is a cultural artifact of the Bete people of West Africa.
